Effective Remedies for Burns

According to Healthline, burns are one of the most common household injuries – it may be burning your hand on a pan, spending too much time under the sun, or spilling hot coffee on your lap. As common as it seems, it is important to know emergency remedies for burns.

According to the Healthline website, burns are categorized by its severity.

First degree burn. A first-degree burn is considered as the least severe because it only affects the outer layer of the skin. It is characterized by mild pain, redness, and swelling. A second degree burn, meanwhile, affects the deeper layer of the skin and cause blisters whilst a third degree burn affects all layers of the skin. Fourth degree burn, known as the most severe type of burn, may involve the joints and burns. Third and fourth-degree burns are considered medical emergencies and should be treated in a hospital.

Mild burns (first-degree and second-degree) that are less than 3 inches in diameter can be treated at home. Mild burns may take one to two weeks to completely heal. The goal of burn treatment, meanwhile, is to reduce pain, prevent infection, and to heal the skin. Here are immediate and helpful remedies for mild burns at home.

Cool Water

Healthline advises to run cool (not cold) water over the burn area for 20 minutes. Then wash the area with soap and water. A cool compress or a wet cloth can also be applied with a 5 to 15-minute interval. The cool compress can help relieve pain and swelling.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has been dubbed as the ‘burn plant’. According to studies, the miracle plant is effective in healing first-degree to second-degree burns. Aloe has anti-inflammatory properties as well as antibacterial effects. Just simply apply a layer of aloe vera gel onto the affected area.

Honey

Honey has made wonders for the body; it also has healing properties for minor burns. Simply apply honey (topically) onto affected area. Honey has both antibacterial and antifungal properties. The acidic pH of honey helps in wound healing; it also has an osmotic effect that relieves swelling.

Burn Ointment

It is important to have a burn ointment in your medicine cabinet or first aid kit. Burn ointment such as Silver Sulfadiazine (Flovidiazine) is effective in the treatment of burns – and it has been considered as the number 1 choice for minor and even major burns. This includes oil burns, fire burns, flat iron burns, and even hot surface burns. Silver Sulfadiazine (Flovidiazine) is available in the market and online pharmacies.
